STATE CHAIR & MOTIF SIDE TABLE
In 2009 Singapore played host to the leaders of APEC’s 21 member economies and 10,000 international delegates, who came together to discuss a wide range of global economic issues facing the Asia Pacific region.
The APEC Organising Committee commissioned Felix Low to design and supply furniture to be used by the leaders during the Leader’s Retreat at the Istana.
The design takes inspiration from Singapore’s multi-cultural diversity and is a fusion of Asian and Western influences.
State incorporates unique weaving elements of cane furniture, and is reminiscent of period furniture from the 16th and 17th century while adopting a fresh approach with its clean contemporary lines.
Motif is inspired by the rich tapestry and fabric of Singapore’s multi-cultural diversity, and features intricate carvings of geometric patterns and motifs on the table top.
Oak was chosen as it exudes a sense of warmth and complements the existing furniture of the meeting room in the Istana. Muted colours were chosen for the upholstery while the textured fabric adds depth to the clean look.
The furniture are currently used by the Istana for important state functions when receiving distinguished leaders and foreign delegates.
